Don’t take it from us, take it from alumni of the Pellet Envy class:

“We have cooked 3 times since your class, got first place pork twice…You guys made more than a little difference. I can’t tell you how much better I am doing. Turn in time used to be when I was a wreck, not coordinated at all. Watching you in real time made me see how it could be done…the best thing is I am so excited to cook again. I cut my schedule way back this year, and now I am ready to fill it back up!” – Susan in Texas

“Just wanted to pass along some good news. By using your techniques, we just got our first Grand Champion today. Not only did we get a GC, we were 1st in chicken, 1st in ribs, 1st in brisket and 5th in pork. So just a note of thanks. This was our first comp since the class. It worked.” – Danielle in Canada

Grand Champion Competition BBQ Team Qualifies To Compete at the American Royal World Series of Barbecue Invitational Contest and Jack Daniels World Championship Invitational

Safeway Grand Champion

Washington, DC (June 27, 2011) – The Pork Barrel BBQ Competition BBQ Team has been named the Grand Champion of the 2011 Safeway National Capital Barbecue Battle. As winner of the only barbecue championship in Washington, DC sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society, the team receives an automatic invitation to two of the top prestigious contests on the professional barbecue competition circuit – the American Royal World Series of Barbecue Invitational Contest in Kansas City, Missouri and the Jack Daniels World Championship Invitational in Lynchburg, Tennessee.

“It’s a huge honor to win the Grand Championship at the Safeway Barbecue Battle, said Brett Thompson, co-founder and CEO of Pork Barrel BBQ. “This is especially meaningful to win this in our hometown where we founded our barbecue sauce company and will soon be home to our first Pork Barrel BBQ restaurant.”

“It is the thrill of a lifetime to win our first Grand Championship at the Safeway National Capital Barbecue Battle, a contest in our hometown and the very first contest Pork Barrel BBQ ever competed in just two years ago, said Heath Hall”, co-founder and President of Pork Barrel BBQ. “Having the chance to compete against the best barbecue teams in the world and walk away with a victory is truly an honor.”

Over 150,000 people attended the 19th annual Safeway National Barbecue Battle in Washington, DC during the two-day competition on June 25th and 26th. The Pork Barrel BBQ Competition BBQ Team competed against several current and former world champion barbecue teams in this years contest. In addition to being awarded the Grand Champion title, trophy and prize money, the team also won the Perdue Sizzlin Chicken National Chicken Championship and the Kingsford Points Chase.

This is the third consecutive year the Pork Barrel BBQ Competition BBQ Team has competed in this nationally recognized barbeque event. It is a meaningful competition for Thompson and Hall who entered their favorite homemade barbecue sauce in the 2009 Safeway National Capital Barbecue Battle’s “Nations Best BBQ Sauce Contest” and won Second Place in their first ever barbecue competition. Last year, the team won the event’s “Chinet Peoples Choice” award for best BBQ sauce.

Hall and Thompson, the sauce company’s co-founders, are recognized as two of the most creative and entrepreneurial minds in barbeque. The company recently released Que Cologne – the world’s first Eau de Barbecue. Since their appearance on ABC’s hit reality TV show Shark Tank in 2009, they have expanded their business from creating BBQ sauces and spice rubs in their home kitchens to selling award-winning BBQ products at over 1,300 stores across America including Safeway, Whole Foods, and Costco. Their inaugural cookbook, the free Pork Barrel BBQ Guide to Tailgating, received praise from food and sports fans across America, and their sauce was recently named Best Sauce in America and one of “The 125 Best Foods for Men” by Men’s Health Magazine.

Entrepreneurs Hall and Thompson recently launched the world’s first social network dedicated exclusively to barbecue, http://www.BBQBackyard.com, and the company will soon open its first restaurant in Alexandria, Virginia this summer. They continue to earn support from avid barbecue fans with their top-ranked Pork Barrel BBQ Blog and as the number one most followed BBQ company on twitter (http://www.twitter.com/porkbarrelbbq).

For more information, visit the Pork Barrel BBQ website http://www.porkbarrelbbq.com and read about their latest updates and adventures on Facebook, Twitter and the company’s blog.

About Pork Barrel BBQ

Pork Barrel BBQ was founded in December 2008 during the peak of the economic crisis to prove that a company not owned or operated by the federal government could succeed, and that if you had a good idea, it was still possible to grab a piece of the American Dream. Pork Barrel BBQ founders, Heath Hall and Brett Thompson, ran the company out of the basement of their houses, selling their award winning BBQ products one bottle at a time. In less than one year, their Pork Barrel BBQ Sauces and Spice Rub were carried in over 1,000 stores in 40 states. Throughout their journey, they have stayed true to their mission – to unite the nation through the great tradition of BBQ, and bring bipartisan flavor to your next meal. The Pork Barrel BBQ Competition BBQ Team entered its first contest, The Safeway National Capital Barbecue Battle, in June 2009, and walked away with two trophies – Second Place in the “Nations Best BBQ Sauce Contest” and Fourth Place for their pulled pork in the Memphis In May portion of the contest. Since then, the team has won multiple awards, including the “Chinet People’s Choice” award for best BBQ sauce in 2010 and other notable Memphis in May and Kansas City Barbecue Society BBQ competition accolades as well as having their Pork Barrel BBQ Original BBQ Sauce named Best Sauce in America and one of “The 125 Best Foods for Men” by Men’s Health Magazine in November 2010. MIM Scrapbook Entry #2 – Jamie Geer Gives Pork Barrel BBQ a Tour of a Jambo Pit at the Memphis in May BBQ World Championship

Posted on:

Dreaming of a Jambo Pit by Jamie Geer?  Me too.  Since the day I turned 16 and got my drivers license I’ve had visions of a 1958 Corvette dancing in my head. From the distinguishing four headlights and immense chrome in the front to the beauty of the Roman Red paint job that covers the exterior you’re sure to turn heads at every stop and then strain the very neck that head is attached to as you excelerate away. The 1958 Corvette wasn’t just a car, it was a work of art – a museum quality piece with its optional 290 horsepower fuel injected V8 engine that made everybody else with a car jealous at first blush.

Today, some 20 years later, I still have the vision of owning that 58 Vette, but it no longer dances alone in the wish list of my mind. It now shares that void with a vision of owning, what can only be called the equivalent of the Corvette on the competition BBQ circuit, a Jambo Pit.

Jambo Pits have been called by many on the competition BBQ circuit, “The best smokers money can buy.”  Pitmasters aren’t just saying that in passing as many of today’s top competitive BBQ teams are putting their money where their mouth is and using these pits hand crafted by Jamie Geer, owner of the Fort Worth, TX based company, all across America. Among the users of Jambo Pits are our friends Tuffy Stone of the Cool Smoke competition BBQ team (who’s pit Jamie is about to give you a tour of) and Mike Richter of Chix, Swine & Bovine competition BBQ team- both of these teams have been enjoy immense success on the competition BBQ circuit.

Jamie has been building quality smokers that offer consistent results since 1989.  One of the unique things about Jamie Geer is that he didn’t start out as a pit builder – he started out as a serious competitor on the competition BBQ circuit and has the trophies to prove it. (You might remember him from TLC’s BBQ Pitmastersshow.)  He knows what series BBQ’ers are looking for in a smoker and he delivers big time!

If you’d like a Jambo Pit you’ll have to get in line with the rest of us - Jamie is backordered through October and that list grows by the day. Why the demand?  These aren’t just functional BBQ pits, they are literally works of art that are handcrafted from top quality materials with an attention to detail that only Jamie can provide as he builds each pit one at a time. Some of the features you’ll find on these beauties include insulated fire boxes, torque flex axles, chrome wheels, white letter tires, custom coatings and paint, stainless steel hinges, and spacious work surfaces.  The downside is you’ll no longer be able to blame your smoker if your meats don’t turn out well.

On Jamie’s website he says, “Pull into a competition or your neighborhood with a Geer pit in tow and forget about going unnoticed. These pits will turn heads wherever you go.” We couldn’t agree more!  Pull into a BBQ contest with a Jambo Pit and you’re sure to turn and strain a few necks, just like that 1958 Corvette.

While we were at Memphis in May, Pork Barrel BBQ was lucky enough to get a few minutes of Jamie’s time (he was cooking with Tuffy Stone’s Cool Smoke team and about to make the walk with Tuffy to collect their Memphis in May World Championship BBQ trophy for their pork shoulder when we filmed this clip).  We asked Jamie to take us on a tour of Tuffy’s new Jambo Pit. Sit back and enjoy our interview with BBQ Pit builder extraordinaire and all around good guy Jamie Geer of Jambo Pits.

If you’re still using a Weber or some other smokers, but would like to ride or Que in the Corvette of smokers give Jamie a call at 817-223-3918 or email him at TXJGEER@aol.com and let him know that Pork Barrel BBQ sent you!  You won’t be sorry you called!
